They thought it would never happen here… Seemingly ripped from today’s headlines, Essential Liberty is an action-filled, thought-provoking work of fiction about governmental overreach and the abuse of power. Through believable characters and words that could have come from our current political debate, Essential Liberty asks, “What if?”…and then provides the answer. The United States government has banned and begun confiscating firearms from its citizens. Insurance executive Don Williams has never owned a gun and is part of the majority of Americans who initially favored “Collection” (the official term for confiscation), yet he’s shocked to see his fellow countrymen being rounded up on the evening news. Don’s good friend, former Marine Mike Niculescu, owns many firearms and has refused to surrender them. The son of immigrants from Communist Romania reveres them as symbols of liberty. Bill Payne, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, commands an ATF Hazardous Operations Team. These elite new teams are reserved for Collection operations with a high level of risk. Payne wants his unit to be the first to make headlines. As the story unfolds, Don is forced to make a choice Will he turn a blind eye to the abuse of power, or will he choose—for the first time in his life—to make a stand on principle that will put everything he cares about at risk?

I would have given this book five stars, however, there are so many paragraphs missing throughout the book at the end of a page that you have to just imagine what the author wrote. It is terrible that they charge so much money for a digital book and don't proof read it. There are no printing costs, no shipping costs, no warehouse costs, no anything cost. Hire someone who can read and write the English language to proof read. This is not the first book I have had this issue with. The author should proof read his own book, because whoever is doing it, isn't doing their job. Now that I'm done venting, this is a really good book about events that will come true someday in the not to distant future. The government really does want to disarm us. Not for our safety, but so they can have total control. Somehow, I don't think it will be as easy as this book makes it to win the fight, but I do believe the fight will be won by the people.Product details

Essential Liberty Rob Olive 9780985902001 Books Reviews
While I’m enjoying this story, it’s quite the page-turner, I do wish the author would focus more on the interesting stuff and not the mundane. Do I have to know that Nicolescu made love to his wife after dinner? I get it that most writers like to humanize their characters, but I rather get the political/conspiracy stuff. For example, the ATF agent creating a false firearms record of someone that has never owned a gun was very interesting. The idea that the government could pursue their enemies by creating false crimes on paper is simply terrifying.
Overall, I recommend this book not just for gun owners but anyone who enjoys political fiction. Liberals should read it to, after all, they’re the ones that fantasize about confiscating firearms, well, this book will show them how exactly that takes place. Furthermore, I give kudos to the writer for making the protagonist (Don) a political moderate and non-gun owner.

This was a fantastic novel! It might be a work of fiction, but those individuals who enjoy shooting and understand individual liberty will see some very scary and realistic things in this book that aren't really a stretch to believe could come true someday. The author does a great job building the characters and the storyline from the beginning. For those of you that like technical accuracy in a book, this book has it. All the firearms related scenes in the book are accurate and well researched. The story is also an "edge of your seat" story. I knocked out the entire book in record time and while reading the last 15% or so on my I couldn't put the thing down!
To me a sign a good book is when you really hate the bad guys and you really like the good guys. This book delivers on both counts. The book also gives many things for readers to ponder and think about from a philosophical, intellectual, and political level. Finally, the main character that the story centers around is a "regular guy" found in truly horrible circumstances. From that perspective it is very believable and makes you wonder how you might react in a similar situation. I highly recommend the book to anyone that wants a great story and wants to think at the same time.
(I see I'm a little late-to-the-party, but I coulda sworn I posted this a couple of weeks ago! Congrats, Mr. Olive, on your first novel.)
This ambitious story interweaves several of my own personal passions the themes of Liberty & its requisite tools, Firearms, juxtaposed with an over-reaching Leviathan-of-a-government full of heavily munitioned minions.
Admittedly I don't read a lot of fiction. When I do I'm awfully picky about style & writing particulars. . .meaning I typically bail if the text sets my red-pen fingers a-twitching. Not so with Essential Liberty. Though the author "head-hops" like a jackrabbit on espressos, the story was completely compelling. Interestingly enough, Olive unfolds the pivotal premise of Gun-Confiscation (his politicians call it the more benign, "Collection") from both sides the civilian/citizen and from the bureaucrats, politicians, and their hands-on "goons."
Clearly it says more about me than Essential Liberty's writer, but from the opening scenes my motivation to hang on came primarily from a desire to see the "bad guys" get their comeuppance. I was not disappointed. The author leaves a clear indication in the closing scene that a sequel (starring Nick Larson) could be forthcoming. I'm really hoping so.
Mr. Olive's theme is an important one the urgency of adhering to the constitution, specifically where there's an attack on the 2nd amendment. Moreover, he shows the importance of taking the source of our freedoms seriously and personally. His plot is good. Style and characterization I hate to complain because the book is a good one, but must note that a writer ought not to TELL us that this character and that one "is not the kind" or "is the type" etc. The writer's purpose must be to just SHOW it in the actions of his characters. The thing is, Mr. Olive DOES show it. So it's unnecessary to tell us. Probably this "annoyance" matters only to this reader and many or most won't even notice it. Other than that, "Essential Liberty" is one of the best "loss of America" type of novels I've come across. One of the great values in his style--the loss of which, and a terrible distraction, in many other novels of this kind--is his perfect grammar. The only other "post-apocalyptic" tale I'd compare it to in regard to good grammar is "Ashfall (Ashfall Trilogy)". Mr. Olive does go deeper than most writers into how America loses freedoms a bit at a time until they're lost altogether. Usually it's just a bad politician or president. And that's about it. Mr. Olive shows that it's the American voters who bring such travesties on themselves by their complacency in accepting, one by one, the evils they ought to be paying attention to. A really great first novel. Hoping for more from Mr. Olive.
